Creative Activities at VASS NDIS Where Expression, Joy, and Community Come Together

VASS NDIS participants engaged in a vibrant creative arts session painting, colouring, and craft at the Activity Day Centre.
A closer look at the session table: art supplies, warm drinks, and creative projects spread across a shared workspace.

There is something quietly transformative about sitting down at a table full of colour brushes, pencils, crayons, and craft materials spread out before you with no pressure, no deadline, and nothing required except the freedom to create. It is in these unhurried, expressive moments that people often discover something new about themselves: a hidden flair for colour, a love of detail, a sense of calm that comes from making something with their own hands.

At VASS NDIS, we believe that creativity is not a luxury; it is a fundamental human need. Our Creative Activities program, run through our Activity Day Centre in Broadmeadows, Melbourne, provides participants with regular, supported opportunities to explore art, craft, and hands-on creative projects in a warm, inclusive, and encouraging environment.

The results are visible in every session: participants who arrive quietly and leave laughing; hands that move with growing confidence as a project takes shape; conversations that spark naturally across a shared table of art supplies. Creative activities are, at their core, about more than making things. They are about feeling capable, feeling connected, and feeling genuinely at home in a community that welcomes and values you.

What Happened at This Session

At this recent Creative Activities session, participants gathered around the table with a full spread of art supplies coloured pencils, markers, crayons, sticker sheets, and paint and engaged in painting, colouring, and craft work together. The atmosphere was relaxed, focused, and warm, with everyone working at their own pace while enjoying each other’s company. There were no skill requirements and no expectations just a table full of colour and the freedom to create.

🎨  Painting

From watercolour washes to bold acrylic strokes, painting is one of the most expressive and therapeutic activities in our program. Participants work on canvases, paper, wooden shapes, and decorative objects, exploring colour, form, and their own creative instincts. No experience is necessary; what matters is the joy of putting colour to a surface and seeing what emerges.

✂️  Craft

Using the array of pencils, markers, crayons, and sticker sheets spread across the table, participants engaged in hands-on craft work, cutting, drawing, and decorating shapes to create their own unique pieces. Craft activities develop fine motor skills, encourage patience and focus, and produce finished pieces that participants feel genuinely proud of.

🖍️  Colouring

Structured colouring, working on shaped cut-outs and illustrated sheets, is one of the most calming and meditative activities we offer. Research consistently shows that colouring reduces anxiety, improves focus, and promotes mindful presence. Around a shared table, it also invites natural conversation and creative exchange between participants.

Why Creative Activities Matter for NDIS Participants

The benefits of creative participation for people living with disability are well-documented and far-reaching. At VASS NDIS, we see these benefits play out in every single session in the focused expression on a participant’s face as they paint, in the laughter that breaks out over a shared craft table, in the way a person’s posture changes when they hold up a finished piece and realise they made something beautiful.

Outcome Area What Creative Activities Deliver
Creative Self-Expression Participants explore personal identity and emotions through art and craft
Fine Motor Skill Development Hands-on activities build dexterity, coordination, and concentration
Social Connection & Belonging Shared creative work sparks natural conversation and peer bonding
Emotional Wellbeing & Calm Creative engagement reduces anxiety and promotes positive mood
Confidence & Self-Esteem Completing a creative piece builds pride, achievement, and independence
Cognitive Stimulation Planning, choosing, and creating engages memory, focus, and decision-making

Beyond these individual outcomes, creative activities contribute to something equally important: a sense of community. Sitting around a shared table, working on projects side by side, helping each other choose colours or cut shapes these simple acts of creative togetherness build the kind of social fabric that makes participants feel they belong. And belonging, at its deepest level, is what NDIS participation is all about.
