Wild Wonders and Warm Connections: Our VASS NDIS Group Outing to Melbourne Zoo
The VASS NDIS group gathers in front of Melbourne Zoo's iconic wildlife mural for a day of discovery, connection, and shared joy.
Melbourne Zoo is one of Australia’s most beloved and iconic destinations, a place where the natural world comes alive, where curiosity is sparked by every corner, and where the simple act of watching a giraffe stretch its neck or a ring-tailed lemur leap between branches can bring a group of people together in a moment of shared wonder.
For our VASS NDIS participants, a recent group outing to Melbourne Zoo in Parkville was exactly that kind of day, one filled with discovery, laughter, meaningful conversation, and the deep warmth of being included and truly part of something wonderful. In an environment as rich and stimulating as Melbourne Zoo, every step brought a new encounter, a new conversation, and a new opportunity for genuine connection.
The visit was a shining example of what NDIS Social and Community Participation is designed to achieve: real people, real community, real joy experienced together with care, support, and intention.
A Day of Discovery at Melbourne Zoo
A Supportive and Inclusive Environment for Everyone
From the moment the group arrived at Melbourne Zoo’s iconic gates, the atmosphere was one of excitement and ease. Melbourne Zoo is one of Australia’s most accessible major attractions, with wide pathways, sheltered viewing areas, and an environment carefully designed to welcome visitors of all abilities and backgrounds.
For VASS NDIS, this accessibility is essential. Our participants come with a wide range of needs, abilities, and preferences, and Melbourne Zoo’s inclusive layout meant that every member of the group could move through the day comfortably, at their own pace, and in their own way. Support workers were present throughout, providing assistance where needed and ensuring that every participant felt safe, valued, and supported to engage fully with the experience.

Viewing and Learning About a Variety of Animals
Melbourne Zoo is home to over 320 animal species, and our participants made the most of the extraordinary variety on offer. The group moved through exhibits that brought them face-to-face or as close as beautifully designed enclosures allow with some of the world’s most remarkable creatures.
Participants spent time at the giraffe viewing area, watching these magnificent animals move gracefully across their African savanna habitat. The lemur enclosure drew particular enthusiasm, with the group gathering under the open-air canopy to watch ring-tailed lemurs leap and play above them in their naturalistic environment. The primate exhibits sparked animated conversation, with participants and support workers sharing their reactions, asking questions, and learning together about the animals’ behaviours and habitats.
For many participants, encounters with animals carry a special kind of emotional resonance, a calm, grounding presence that reduces anxiety and invites genuine curiosity. Research consistently demonstrates the therapeutic benefits of animal interaction and observation for people with disabilities, and the zoo environment delivers these benefits naturally and abundantly throughout the day.

Social Connection and Shared Enjoyment Among All Attendees
What struck everyone present was not just the animals but the quality of connection that formed naturally between participants throughout the day. Walking side by side through the zoo’s tree-lined pathways, pausing together at exhibits, sharing reactions to what they saw, and stopping for refreshments mid-visit, all of these moments created a fabric of genuine social interaction that is difficult to manufacture in any other setting.
The zoo environment has a unique quality: it gives people something to talk about. Every exhibit becomes a conversation starter, every animal sighting a shared moment of surprise or delight. For participants who may find social interaction challenging in more structured settings, the natural flow of a zoo visit provides exactly the kind of low-pressure, spontaneous social environment that the NDIS community participation framework is designed to create.
Meaningful Interaction and Genuine Engagement With Exhibits
Throughout the visit, participants engaged deeply and with evident enthusiasm with the exhibits they encountered. At the lemur walk-through enclosure, the primates’ playful movement prompted spontaneous laughter and excited pointing from across the group. At the giraffe exhibit, participants gathered at the viewing rail and watched quietly, sharing in the peaceful, almost meditative calm of observing such a remarkable animal in a space that honours its natural environment.
At the primate viewing windows, two participants stood together for an extended time, absorbed in watching the animals interact, a moment of quiet, shared presence that said more about the value of the day than any structured outcome measure could.
